In a democracy, it is wildly inappropriate for politicians to appoint Judges or to set their own constituency boundaries. The international norm is depoliticized independent institutions; judicial appointment commissions and boundary commissions, with credibly neutral experts.

In fairness selecting judges is normally done by politicians (at least in anglophone states). It is however normally very depoliticised - while appointing judges broadly from one’s political tradition is normal, the emphasis placed on political views in USA is very odd.

Often this is rubber stamping or choosing from a commission selected shortlist. I don’t know of any advanced democracy where politicians do all the picking.

The Government does not have to choose from the JAAB shortlist (which is 7 long in any case) here.
