If your argument is that he dishonestly ran as a moderate, he certainly isn't running as one now. That at least should diminish the swing votes he gets, by your own theory.

I think "moderate for a republic on the issues" may be a bit too simple here, like these issues are not necessarily one dimensional and also Trump is like... a chaos agent first? He was going to bomb Iran in retaliation for a drone being shot down?

This is also covered well in American Carnage: the ACA repeal failed because the Freedom Caucus fucked it up. If a small hard-right faction hadn’t tried to gum up the works, repeal would have sailed. There’s a lesson in that for D’s.

The GOP had an ACA replacement (switching from guaranteed issue to continuous coverage). The Freedom Caucus loonies tried to kill Medicaid and deregulate “essential benefits”. Trump refused, and the Freedom Caucus played chicken and broke the whole deal.
