Federal oversight of @awscloud is probably inevitable, and a good thing. Imagine the consequences of us-east-1 disappearing and it’s hard to argue against it.https://www.wsj.com/articles/fed-examined-amazons-cloud-in-new-scrutiny-for-tech-11564693812 …

Okay, AWS decides randomly to turn us-east-1 off tomorrow in favor of a harder business problem such as "competing with my snark." What do you imagine the US economy does?

Is that even a possible scenario? AWS has long-term contracts. They've got to meet those contracts and can't just shut down. Anyways, worrying a company is going to exit a profitable business is creating a problem that doesn't exist.

But seriously, no major business would run in public cloud if the cloud operator could just say one day "We don't like you. Get out now". It is an existential risk. You can't reassemble your tech stack somewhere else fast enough not to lose huge number of customers or go bankrupt

Sorry; it’s shorthand for “complete destruction of a region / a business shift / company goes under.” It’s unlikely, sure—but if you trust a $50 billion company to it, you need to address the risk.

If this incredibly unlikely kind of scenario were to happen, I'm certain that a high percentage of senior AWS people would be working non-stop to restore service by any and every means. Even without hope of payment, even if it meant to former competitors offerings.

I absolutely believe you, but it’s woefully insufficient and out of place in a BCM document.

But would you have access to the data / encryption keys? Would it be legal if you were no longer employees of Amazon to try and access customer data?
