      3. Opportunities are boundless and barriers few. I could propose, start and tech-lead @Amazon_Route_53 as a junior engineer. Just do it.

Ah - I see this tweet is a couple of years old ... aka the good old days, when the zeitgeist wasn’t so against the idea of a “root cause”.pic.twitter.com/txGiuRR2a5

That's the reason for the advice, but I still roll my eyes at that trend. 5 why's isn't about finding a single root cause, it's about finding the many systemic issues that can contribute to operational risks and fixing them!

I also roll my eyes at the idea of observability tools being for better event triage. Humans debugging things to mitigate events should very very much be a final resort.

For 5 whys, see e.g. https://twitter.com/UberGeekGirl/status/1114358940471447552 … and/or ask "How did we end up incorporating 5Whys & RCA into postmortems anyhow" (perhaps it was cargo culting?)

I'm just rolling my eyes more now. 5 why's does not enforce a single pathway, and you don't have to stop at 5 anythings.

if 5whys doesn't enforce a single pathway, or linearize, or come with assumptions about incidents having a root cause, or require you to ask exactly 5 times... is it even (Toyota/LMS) 5 Whys?pic.twitter.com/vHM3OFVLZ5

If you're saying we should look holistically at multiple levels and layers of incidents and talk to people about how they experienced incidents and the rationale behind their actions at the time... I think we agree? In which case this is just a terminology issue?

This, to me, feel a lot like a lot of the stuff i have to deal with. "Ok the name is not how you should use it. If you would understand it, it is not at all what the shortname means. It is good instead. You just do not get it". See TDD too.
