A really unfortunate caveat re: cross-platform is that macOS (up to and including Catalina) still ships with Bash version 3. This makes for hard choices about whether or not to use certain constructs, such as associative arrays.

Mac also has incompatible options with many commands. When I write bash scripts for my team I often have to do OS detection and use conditions for some lines to make it portable
