I definitely agree that performers are rarely narcissists--a narcissist doesn't need audience applause for self-worship. The hunger for approval I speak of is indeed often part of a painful introversion and insecurity that can only be assuaged by an audience's cheering. (1/2)

IOW, I wasn't criticizing performers for enduring the torture of regular performance, but rather offering an explanation for the willingness to endure it. Rather than heroes (or villains), I think of them as people driven by need to endure what others can't or won't. (2/2)
