Is it 2^{num edges}? I'm getting ~4000 partitions and wonder what I'm doing wrong :/

I stopped counting at 1,296, but it can be up to 2,400. From node A's perspective - it can have visibility of BCD, or just BC, BD, CD, B, C, D - which is 7 partitions. The same can simultaneously happen (or not) from B, C, and D's perspective, so that gives us 7^4.

Great illustration by Colm. And these failures aren’t just theoretical - we do see them all the time. That is why many correct-looking consensus algorithms actually fail. And this doesn’t even account that most failures in today’s networks are gray 1/

Connectivity doesn’t just get severed, but rather some TCP connections work, while others fail. This is because most data center networks are multipath, that is there are multiple distinct paths between any two nodes 2/

I've seen cases where a node can't communicate with itself.
