They’ve drifted towards a belief that their interpretation of how government should function is the only way, and it’s justified to prevent citizens from interfering with that because they don’t know better.

My take: The US didn’t have to go through the pain that everyone else did to acquire a democracy. The French started pinning for it in 1789 and it took damn near a century before they were rid of the Bourbons. They failed multiple times before something stuck.
