Reproductive Rights aside, he voted several times against funding STEM programs for underrepresented minorities. How can you have a con that wants "diverse & inclusion" and your keynote speaker has DEFUNDED these programs? That's a TECHNICAL fact why he shouldn't have done it.

He voted along with every other Republican not to add an additional organization to the STEM education org chart we already have. I disagree with that vote, but it wasn’t a statement about diversity.

He also didn’t DEFUND a STEM Gateways. Is there some other vote you’re thinking of?

If the reason for not adding that group into the STEM Gateway program was "other Republicans voted no too" then that's a very weak reason falling under whataboutism. He (as a URM himself) actively blocked funding for other underrepresented minorities in STEM.

That is not in fact the reason. And, so we’re clear: you said he voted to “defund” STEM Gateway, which is a program that does not exist. Defunding implies that people already benefiting were then cut off.

Again: what BH did is going to get Hurd votes. It’s certainly going to help shield him from a primary challenger that would have been easier to knock off in his district in 2020.

I’m stealing this point from someone else, but I’ll make it here anyways: go look and see when the last time, before the BH controversy, Will Hurd had full-throated support from the right wing media. He sure as shit has it now.

I don't care. My values are not going to be held hostage because some politician might get voted or not in Texas.

That’s fine. I have a hard time supporting political actions against Republicans that are likely as not, in straightforward obvious ways, going to get Republicans elected. The invitation was a mistake to begin with. It was handled badly thereafter. Nobody should be cheering.

OR instead of passively not do anything, actively work against them? Donate to his opponent, volunteer at a call bank, etc. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" E. Burke

In fairness, Thomas did say he was likely to donate to Hurd's opponent. PS Edmund Burke was pretty nuts ;-) Ironically it used to annoy me no end to have to sit or teach in the Edmund Burke lecture rooms at Trinity College in Dublin.
