"Error budgets" are the god-damn worst idea I've heard of in recent years. SLAs should be realistic goals about what we can achieve with our current techniques and tools, not permission to fail a certain amount.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "I just can't." Presumably, you're referring to AWS and I agree that for your product, planned downtime is much worse. However, I'd guess most developers are working on stuff much closer to http://reddit.com & https://bhphotovideo.com .

Planned downtime is bad there too .. it impacts customers. Advertisers and purchasers. BH's hours have definitely lost sales from me! They can all succeed in spite of it, with great offerings, but it's like racing with weights attached.
