In baseball, the regular season is 162 games. All other sports are played by slackers, obvs.

Those games are pretty long too. That's a lot of hours. But there's also a lot of just standing around. Classic union gig. Probably have good shop stewards.

The game is just too physically brutal for a longer season. The injury attrition rate over a 16-game NFL season is far higher than for any other sport. Teams have at least one backup at every position, and still routinely need to sign walk-ons at several positions.

Hmmm, the best pro rugby players and teams in Europe play 30+ games per season, their game is arguably as physically brutal...

The recovery from the game is pretty brutal... It’s not uncommon to have dislocated joints, pulled muscles, bruises. Injuries are common - few players play all 16 games.

Plus 4 preseason games but whatever. NFL games' toll on the body is somewhere between hockey and UFC, I think. Look at average career length, how many are ended by injury.

Part of the reason the NFL is so popular in the US. As a fan, it doesn't require a huge time commitment to follow any given team.

You can't compare a soccer game to an NFL game. Playing one game in the NFL has the equivalent impact on your body as being in a serious car accident. Compare that to guys touching the ball 4 times a game, taking a dive and holding their ankle like babies.
