I don't feel owned. I exchange my efforts (including inventions or other technical artifacts) for my compensation. Amazon has a painless way to notify the company of, or get assistance navigating, "outside activity" that may be covered in one's employment agreement.
My advise is to focus on achieving ground-level consensus driven decision making by all of the owners, including managers, rather than any hint of "managers are in charge". Only rare and tough decisions should need escalation.

The promotion to SDE2 had to be approved by my manager’s manager’s manager’s manager. It’s really hard to only escalate the tough questions when you have one manager who insists on approving even the most basic decisions.
