Out of context that doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Signing up for hosting and supporting something can't just rely on scrappy volunteerism and it's something we should be intentional about. But good decisions can still be poorly made, and narrow "not my problem"-ism is bad.

The only reason I was aware of the problem was because I was on the team who had to clean up the mess. It felt like the bet management was making was that the probability of the SN conflict happening again is low enough that the expected value in preventing it doesn’t justify

Fixing it. But expected value calculations don’t account for terrible morale when you’re spending weeks manually correcting serial numbers because of a preventable problem.
