SMTP MITM was one of the very few remaining use cases for DNSSEC where other protocols didn’t already have a solid answer.

Between CT, MTA-STS, and DoH/DoT, the majority — depending on who you are, 80% to 99% — of the benefit of DNSSEC has been subsumed by other protocols now.
