When I did this little research excursion I was *really* jaded with the levelling system; told my org's leaders I'd leave if they promoted me and that ended up being a thorn in /other/ people's promotions.

Talking to people though, getting a bit more involved, turned me around. Now I see it as a positive kind of career gamification. Not to be taken as the be all and end all, but important to have and get as right as we can none-the-less. Apologies for the spammy reply thread!
