I started building my re:Invent talk on (virtual) index cards first and then moved to PowerPoint once I knew which story lines I wanted to keep and the order. Way easier moving things around, reordering things, seeing the whole flow, etc with cards.

Same -- I sketched mine out on my iPad first. Fiddling with slide formatting and searching for stock images takes a ton of time. At least one person suggested I just present the hand-drawn deck.pic.twitter.com/RJv9V6YRG8

Hmm, interesting. I find it slows me down because I end up getting mired in the visuals too early. I usually start with an outline in a text doc, and then when I feel pretty good about it, I move it into Slides/Keynote, make it look nice, and do final tweaks.

Ditto. I'm on PC and all my talks begin their life in notepad. I can't do *anything* in notepad except capture thought fragments and build an outline.

I start with some vague topic slides as an outline, talk to myself, refactor slides, repeat. They start as idea notes and slowly get refactored into what people see. I’m doing that this morning.

Depending on the style of talk, tweet storms are also useful to get the words out. You can then build slides around your words.

PowerPoint certainly makes it easier to write a bad speech.
