3rd level education is largely free or heavily subsidized in Ireland. I don't have any debt from going to two Universities there. That's policy! Existing debt could also be forgiven, or at least swapped for lower interest rates. That's also policy!

I mostly agree: I worry that if you make the link between economic benefits and education the explicit reason to finance university tuition, that makes it easier down the line to cut funding for degrees that aren't requested by the market

Agreed. Also I think it's notable that the only thing "conservative" about this line of reasoning is the inclusion of market machinery? Like: socialists think (with good reason) that socialist policies _are_ good for economic growth. They just do a little whole-system accounting.
