It's clear the bay needs hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of new homes, together with huge transit investments. Otherwise we get displacement and huge carbon emissions.

Can hi-rise be built affordably in SF? It's not like Manhattan with its granite foundations, and it's very seismically active. It's pretty expensive in LA, and Millennium tower in SF isn't exactly a success.

London and Paris have five to seven story urban cores ... they're not known for their livability or affordability ;-) But I guess the populations are much larger there. In both cases they're now going high-rise where they can.

I was skeptical about high rise here in Seattle, but it seems to be working. We've had a lot of high-rise capacity built, generally in the luxury/premium bands because of cost of build .. and rents are finally stabilizing through the market, and housing market cooled somewhat.
