When I emerge from arrivals in Dublin or Schiphol there are always families and loved ones waiting to greet homecomers ... but Dulles or SEA-TAC ... nothing. What makes that difference between airports?

Americans pick up their loved ones at the curb outside baggage claim. Airport parking is a hassle and crazy expensive.

Depends on the day. Sometimes IAD is a sea of people with signs and balloons and flowers.

It’s probably the volume of business travelers who have nothing so special as family to look forward to on their trip.

Ease of getting to the airport ? In Geneva we would go pick up people b/c the airport is always easily accessible. In SeaTac if it's a bad traffic day there is no way we would go pick someone up, we would tell them to get on the light rail and we pick them up at the station.

I see people at SeaTac in baggage claim with signs, waiting for family. I think it depends on the time of day and week.

I park my car and wait for my wife whenever I pick her up. WAY less stressful than trying to time baggage claim curbside pickups and it’s just a nice thing to do that costs as much as a cup of coffee.

Before the post-9/11 security measures Americans would wait at the gate for loved ones to greet as soon as they got off of the plane. Now the airport is just a subway station and cell phones make it easier to coordinate pick-ups instead of waiting at the terminal.

Not to throw stones or anything, but could be the individualistic nature of American culture. i.e. take an Uber, find us home.
