pickups & electronics are the easiest things to upgrade they influence your tone of course, but a nice sounding/nice playing guitar body with cheap pickups is far far better than a cheap guitar with expensive pickups it's all about the wood maple fingerboards give brighter tone

this may sound silly, but when trying out electric instruments, play it for a few minutes without plugging it in get a feel for how it plays & it's natural sound before getting an amp involved

after trying out a few you'll start to get an idea if you want a thicker/thinner wider/narrower neck, and a shallow or deep-radiused fingerboard a lot depends on how big (& strong) your hands are e.g. personally I like narrow-neck deep-radius '70s Jazz bass necks a lot

& don't restrict yourself to Telecasters just because you're playing country you can play any music with any axe, it's just a question of your personal style plenty of country bands with Les Pauls & Strats out there

you can tweak the tone of any guitar with different strings, amps, effects, pickups, etc. but you can't change the way it plays & feels (well not without a luthier anyway :-)

I'm not a fan of modern country but Joe Bonamassa & Brian Setzer are two examples of guys that I really like that play blues & rockabilly, who in addition to being amazing musicians are absolute encyclopedias of electric guitar history they have tons of youtube vids check 'em out

I'm playing Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline and Lyle Lovett songs
I know what kind of necks suit me, and machine heads/tuners I can assess, but it's taking me a while to really hear differences in tone. It's all amps to me. I'll try that acoustic trick from now!1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

it's really hard to compare axes when you don't know what strings are on them picks can influence tone a little bit too...

don't get too tied up on amps, spend the $ on the guitar :-) I'm no reference on guitar amps, but I always liked Orange & Mesa Boogie (I consider GK the bass reference) https://www.sweetwater.com/c625--Orange--Guitar_Combo_Amps/low2high … even cheap Orange models have really good tone e.g. 20RT is a great starter amp <$200
