Unpopular opinion: to really make it as a senior/lead engineer, you have to get good at soaking up interruptions, only managing or minimizing them for others not yourself. You just have to adapt to working productively in smaller time slices and handling context switches. Tough!

Not unpopular imo, it’s reality & best for the overall team. As you progress, team health, mentoring & product health become more important than individual contributions. If you’re still the SME for each piece then you’re failing. Major mental switch & takes time to learn it.

        It's unpopular with me ;-) I mean, I wish it /weren't/ true.

True, but dam it can be tough. I sometimes just need uninterrupted hours to dig in and deeply understand the problem at hand.

Me too, and I increasingly find myself doing it outside of regular working hours, or on a plane etc.

I sit in an office with a rarely closed door. Every time we reshuffle,my former officemate warns the next one to expect a constant stream of drivebys as everyone stops by for a chat or ad-hoc sync. 100% on point about interruptions & how to account for it,but a price worth paying

Is it unpopular? I might have complained a bit sometimes at the amount of context switching but in truth it was always part of the fun. Apart from when the switch meant booking meeting rooms, or finding one.

True words. Living through this right now and as you mentioned, its not easy. Took me a while to understand that randomization is a norm in a senior role rather than exception. Enabling others by soaking interruptions should be added to a manifesto.
