The Oscars already have a "popular" bias. If you ask Academy members which films/performances they are voting for Vs what will stand the test of time, they give different answers. In the moment, it's more about "it's due" and fueling the Holywood economy than greatness of art.

I see it as a populist revolt against the elites. Hollywood acknowledgement that the people have a voice too.

I’ll add, I’m no populist. But I see the academy on the same scale I see beer snobs. It’s fucking beer, I’m drunk, I’m having a good time, so it’s good and worthy of people enjoying it and not feeling uncultured because they do.

I can't take the academy seriously. Or awards in general really. Ratings and rankings of art are a parody of purpose.
