How does one become a judge in other places you have lived? I've seen an alternative of election by popular vote, which I think is an even worse option, especially when combined with privately financed elections.

Judicial appointments commissions are common; made up of existing judges, bar association leaders, civil servants and representatives from civic society. They assess and recommend candidates and governments rubber stamp.
