Periodic reminder that it is NEVER acceptable to make a romantic/sexual move on someone who is currently your direct report or mentee. If you want to, get them to a safe place off your team or with another mentor *first* and still tread very carefully.

I swear every sexual harassment case I’ve heard about lately the guy is like “but she seemed interested!” She’s your mentee. She’s scared of you. You don’t pick up on the power dynamic because it’s been years since you’ve been there. It’s never acceptable. Just don’t do it.

If you manage any kind of mentorship program, especially if it’s not done under a company with policies about this, make this a strict policy. You’ll get a lot of “What if we’re in love?!” Well then don’t be a mentor anymore. Strict policy.

Most sexual harassment I have personally experienced & heard about is not the result of platonic actions being misinterpreted. It’s the result of someone genuinely trying to date someone, fully intentional, just not understanding that the power dynamic can make that traumatizing.

Then we are basically punishing people for their lack of social intelligence. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/humans-evolved-big-brains-to-be-social-122425811/ …pic.twitter.com/IvgwnlcH5j

When it’s a lack of social intelligence that does great harm, shouldn’t it be punished? I literally still have nightmares about sexual harassment that happened many years ago. It really hurt me and left permanent damage.

I think we lack appreciation on how hard is it to develop social intelligence. About punishment, it really depends on your purpose. You might be surprised how little punishment serves any purpose. Sam Harris's Free Will explains it better than I canhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCofmZlC72g&feature=youtu.be&t=38m36s …

The purpose is to protect the victims; and it does work, people respond to incentives regardless of philosophical debates about free will.
