How you process all the billing data would be interesting, volumes must be insane, particularly after the move to per-second for EC2.

Our metering and billing system is amazing, and there's a lot that goes into it, but I also think of the payment networks that have to handle massive Economy-wide first-of-the-month billing cycles. Blows my mind how the finance world handles that elasticity.

IAM internals always fascinated me, in part because IAM is involved in literally every API call, which seems like ludicrous scale

It blows my mind too, and consider that it does all of that *and* now supports AWS organizations for auth, a layer of indirection embedded within it all. It's a mind-boggling TPS rate.

Rollout process of new services across regions, what is internal monitoring of services like, how works the training of technical customer support at this scale, what it takes to deploy a new region from scratch
-
To answer part of your question about service roll-out, check out this video, about 1 hour 1 min in (although the entire video is definitely worth watching!)

I'd *love* to see how the KMS control plane interops with your HSMs. Based on talks from RWC, the scale must be staggering.
