14 years later, I still love Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle completely, madly, and unconditionally. I definitely understand why many don’t, but goddamn, for me, they’re basically perfect. Which explains why I’ve read the whole thing an average of once a year.
When I re-read it after reading the B.C., it was a very different book for me, and Enoch Root was more compelling. They go together in my head. But then I also can't separate Cryptonomicon from the "Mother Earth Mother Board" essay. https://www.wired.com/1996/12/ffglass/ …

Yeah, Enoch definitely came into his own as more than just a deus ex machina after reading the Cycle. Mind you, I love CRYPTO and always have (I literally first read it in one 24 hour binge on release day). And I almost forgot about that essay!
