KILL THE BILL! Or read it. [video] watch: youtu.be/6QArtcoeiAU I've read the Andrews govt's pandemic bill, reviewed Human Rights Law Centre rec's & assessed changes secured by 3 crossbenchers. Here. Stop reading what liars & con artists tell you about a bit of legislation.

This is promising: I got my international vaccination certificate without issue. And I downloaded the VDS-NC app too. Pretty cool. But: my certificate comes up as invalid! "The app read the QR code correctly but the security check failed." Something's amiss? #covid19au

This was hilarious. Do yourself a favour and check out this Fringe show online... Took me back to the innocent, heady days of 2020's first adorable toilet paper riot.

I went through almost this exact list, I'd say it took about 3 seconds.

Melbourne earthquake determination: 1. Is the washing machine on spin cycle? 2. Is a big truck driving past? 3. Is someone moving furniture and dropped a piano? 4. Is blasting/drilling going on nearby? 4. Is it going on long enough to consider these questions? 5. Earthquake!

Sometimes I've been known to say that division caused by social media misinformation is a threat to civilization. I don't feel like such a crank today

Good piece on denialism by . I wonder if the growth of anti-vax sentiment is entirely organic. Hard to say these days!

While the paranoid mindset and arguments of antivaxxers and climate deniers can appear very similar, there are important differences between the politics of the two phenomena. theguardian.com/australia-news
This is a great op-ed by - thought provoking, timely and has some novel ideas. I'll throw Inside Story a few bucks!

I'm for Zero: Covid, flu deaths, smoking, road crashes, domestic violence. We've been willing to live with all except Covid, but we shouldn't be insidestory.org.au/what-about-oth

I f'n love reading stuff like this on : "This article is about the fictional humanoid type of creature. For the desktop environment for UNIX-like operating systems, see GNOME. For the garden ornament, see Garden gnome. For other uses, see Gnome (disambiguation)."

There are also arguments for a soft lockdown until vaccinations come in rather than go for 0:
Quote Tweet
Should Victoria consider a 'soft lockdown'? @TonyBlakely_PI: "Let's assume we're sitting at 40 cases on 2 September ... options, we keep going hard with the mental health impacts ... Or do we go for a soft lockdown & pivot earlier than we would have liked living with the virus."

The data is hard to contradict. Lockdown much easier to stomach when the graph looks like the right one, isn't it?

NSW has exceeded last year's VIC peak of 700 cases very close to 12 months ago. Here is a side by side comparison. When VIC peaked there were signs of a break I think, I can not see one for NSW.

2021 covid lockdowns are like climate action. It's way too late to get things back down to zero, but every bit helps - cos the alternative is lots of people die. 😧 #COVID19au

Truly bizarre. Citing pre-prints is normal academic practice in many fields. Why would you kill someone's application (which can take a month to prepare) over such a trivality?
Quote Tweet
The @arc_gov_au has ruled *dozens* of fellowship grants ineligible because the applications cited "preprints". Not just in the applicants' publication list, but *anywhere* in the app. Not just those co-authored by the applicant, but *any* "preprint". twitter.com/matthewbailes/

With optimistic settings we can expect to spend about 2 months a year locked down, including dropping outbreak chance due to vaccination. If the chance of an outbreak occurring is ~1/fortnight, then we're spending 4-5 months locked down. Warning, oversimplified model! (2/2)
