I mean... the "newbies" part of that might not appreciate roll-you-own ;-)

Been using FlashcatUSB (Classic and Pro) for years, good hw (esp. Pro) and great support from developer on unsupported parts etc. Cons: Not the cheapest, App Windows only (.NET source provided, could work with Mono?).
-
They look to be $30(?)... IDK how cheap you are, but that falls in my def of cheap!

I like the
@hydrabus and I could see it being even more appealing to beginners with HydraTool (GUI wrapper) -
Pull requests are welcome for https://github.com/hydrabus/hydrafw … https://github.com/hydrabus/hydratool … ...

The
@infosectcbr BusSide is pretty awesome. http://wiki.infosectcbr.com.au/index.php/Busside … -
I'll second that! It's cheap and easy to use, and has a TON of unique features - but does require some assembly and the usb-serial bottleneck is annoying... (though that might be fixable by dumping files over wifi?)

I did teach newbies to use
@hydrabus with a custom scripting. They were all happy. Problem is it's not cheap. I don't like flashrom in the classes as it doesn't teach anything from SPI unless you show students how to implement new chip config. -
For flashrom all is ready and a pull request is waiting since lot of time without any feedback from flashrom Dev team if someone know some guys in flashrom team maybe we could have it merged
