Is @SusanWojcicki still meeting with creators on the state of Youtube...? Because if so I'd love to ask some questions about the balance of the need to court advertisers vs. the need to make creators feel important and not thrust aside. 1/

You have the
@rackareal guys speaking out about censorship in this Verge article, warning of a Disney-fied Youtube where only certain types of content are promoted. I think it's important to double down on the transparency we've been promised. 3/https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/5/18287318/youtube-logan-paul-pewdiepie-demonetization-adpocalypse-premium-influencers-creators …Show this thread -
Starting with: Why are the top trending Youtube channels ESPN, TheEllenShow, and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon? Is this a deliberate choice or the result of a purely algorithmic process. I can't help but feel that it is a result of Youtube promoting content they know 4/

Won't get them in trouble. Recall back to the Logan paul or Pewdiepie debacle. Part of what made that bad was both of these incidents "trended" on Youtube, reflecting poorly on the site. Many have criticized this, and it may have led to an overcaution with some of it's best 5/

Creators. Where Youtube often promotes only what they know is ultra "safe" content in the public eye. But this leaves people like
@shanedawson out in the cold when he produces one of the biggest documentaries ever and it doesn't trend. It leaves a "Youtube Rewind 2018" 6/Show this thread -
taste in the mouth of both creators and viewers, as it feels like Youtube is catering to brands and advertisers with the way they portray their site and that there is a chasm between what is going on, on Youtube and what Youtube is showing. 7/

And look I know a lot of people don't think the trending tab is a "big deal" and there's a lot of people who don't use it. But the way UI is designed is SO important with big platforms. Default choices shape the platform. While you may not care what's on trending 8/

It's one of the 4 default ways to find new videos. That is HUGE. and creators who both are veterans, and those who are new on to the platform, are looking at what trends as a metric of the types of content that "succeed" or are "approved of". This then influences what 9/pic.twitter.com/8scIhsqm4K

Creators choose to produce in the future. So even if you "never look at trending", what tends to trend today, you will see more of tomorrow. This is why you should care when the top channels aren't creators, and instead are corporations and media production companies. 10/

I don't see a great solution to this problem as of right now TBH. The main issue is that Youtube feels (and maybe rightfully so) responsible for the actions of their endemic creators in a way that TV never has. This is in part because while Time Warner doesn't actively curate 11/

content, Youtube does, with their algorithm. so people can reasonable ask, why are you promoting X? But the issue then is, there is NO way Youtube can monitor all of it's millions of creators, so you're left with Logan Paul gaffes, that don't just reflect on him, but on all. 12/

Which then gets us back to where we started, Youtube reactionarily favors ultra-safe corporate content in fear of being accused of promoting "bad" creators. Anyways, that's my jam right now. LMK if you have any great solutions to this. I think it's a rock/hard place situation.
