I am such a huge fan of the Battlefield series and even I have to admit the 2042 game is kind of a total loss :( .. especially a shame because the prior two games (bf 1 and bf V) were excellent. What happened?

yep, even after revisiting the beginning of 'season two' there is no magic in this game. It's, embarrassingly enough, among the worst entries -- if not the single worst entry -- in franchise history.

well, maybe Season 3 will turn things around, but MW2 is *very* good so the overall prospects are dim:

Recently got a new GPU so I played some BF2042 tonight and while I can see how it's improved, the specialist system is needlessly complex. Just give us 4 classes.

This is Dice's critical weakness. They are drawn to complexity like flies to honey. They CANNOT keep it simple, even when that'd literally be a better game, e.g. Bad Company 2
