Fuck you, depression, I successfully mounted a pot rack today. It’s the little wins that help, and also power tools. Ok, mostly power tools. This seems unnervingly relevant:

Is it possible to have hot takes on tooltips? I'm going to find out on Wednesday!

I just had my eyes dilated, so I can’t read any text that isn’t comically large. I don’t know how to use a screen reader. I’ll be fine in a few hours, but this has been a fascinating journey into how well third-party iOS apps respect text size accessibility settings! (Thread)

New writing thing! Some tips for debugging semantic issues with complex interactive components. "Talk to your kids about ARIA before it's too late." 😉

With Edge moving over to Chromium, there is no longer any working Windows high contrast media query. So here’s your periodic reminder that HTML semantics affect high contrast mode colors, but ARIA semantics do not.

I feel like you might be the person to ask about tea recommendations in that area :D

Are any of the lovely folks I know on here around London the weekend of Jan 25/26 and interested in getting a drink? (tea, alcohol, bubble tea, coffee, oolong tea... really any variety 😁)

Honoring ARIA best practices and i18n concerns, suggested priority of methods for labeling a control: 1. Native HTML techniques, 2. aria-labelledby pointing at existing visible text, 3. Visibly-hidden content that is still in the page, 4. aria-label. Yeah? Meh?

This is probably my favorite thing I've written, and also the most personally accurate: "Some people painstakingly teach themselves to identify birds on sight, and others do the same for combobox and listbox patterns on the web. Everyone needs a hobby."

I made a handy page with links to ALL THE COMBOBOX THINGS (at least all the ones I've made), including both 24a11y articles, on my blog:

Spare a thought for the people of Iraq and Iran who have been protesting authoritarianism, corruption and sectarianism for months, against all odds, with hundreds killed by the authorities. As usual, their well-being will be on nobody’s agenda. 😢

I love this article comparing D&D to accessibility teams! I guess we are all wizards after all 🧙‍♂️ bonus fun fact: D&D was invented in Wisconsin! proof we make more than cheese and beer 🧀🍻

Find out the results of usability testing a bunch of select/combobox patterns! Part 2 of my deep dive, in which I hate on <select multiple> and also say this: "Please come to my TED talk where I repeat 'just use a select element' for 40 minutes straight."

I've been wanting to write about select/combobox patterns for a while, and finally did! This is the first of a 2-parter on why custom <select>s are so difficult, and what to do about it. Part 2 is coming soon (tomorrow) 🙂

Anyway, read Ryan's article! And also maybe come say hi and chat at CSUN, we'll both be there :)
