Not getting feedback after interviews sucks, but employers don't do it because they're scared of getting sued. I talked to a bunch of lawyers. Here's what I learned.

Weird thing they don't tell you about selling products on a mailing list: every message you send will have unsubs. You build up subscribers by writing content, and burn them by sending emails, especially asking for a sale.

Anybody know what "Icon?" files are? I see them show up occasionally, and I can't tell what's creating them. Google is failing me on this one, even with double-quotes.

This month (Tue 18th Feb) we're meeting at Platform 8, Inverness. We'll have a Pub Quiz and plenty of chat & discussions. The table is booked from 5.30pm but you're welcome to join us later. Please RSVP so the table can be booked for the right number.

Periodic Reminder: When debugging, you must first accept that something you believe is true is not true. If everything you believed about this system were true, it would work. It doesn't, so you're wrong about something. This is a surprisingly common stumbling block for devs.

Today is my first day working specifically for *me*. Last month was vacation, so I wasn't really working for anybody :-)

Also: I love an article about comeuppance as much as the next guy. But the Republicans trying to turn the US into a dictatorship truly don't care about being shown up as massive liars (or mostly, as traitors.)

I don't particularly like Bernie Sanders and I won't vote for him in the primary. But to be clear, I'd vote for a potted ficus over Trump in the general election. I'd much *rather* vote for Warren, but the primaries are often effectively over by CA's voting time.

Curious about using Rails Ruby Bench? I've put together a pretty extensive how-to:

A lot of companies that have nondisparagement agreements and want you to accept them give offers that are hard to distinguish from straight-up trolling.

I haven't learned a lot about Andrew Yang, but this proposal is legitimately terrifying. "Clear buildings and structures that cause urban blight." "Overrule local regulations." I hail from California - this would be used in awful ways, no question.

This is a great thread clarifying the aims of the Ethical Source WG.

Which sounds totally arrogant. But you know, I *do* think Rebuilding Rails is really good. I just don't think it's terribly polished ('cause it isn't.)

It's weird looking back at 2012-era Proko (art and drawing tutorials.) They're *brilliant* but with *so* much less polish than he currently has. And then I realise: what Rebuilding Rails was for me, this was for him. Huh.

I have complicated feelings about this. I cannot in good faith argue with its factual assertions, though.

A very architecturally solid list of recommendations to build out a little SaaS app and see if it can get some traction.

Haskell from First Principles is finally up to its full-on release. It's a *great* book explaining its material in great detail, even if I'm annoyed at the Haskell language it explains so well :-)
