At my local library, someone had taken the Snow White book and darkened her skin. I thought it was great.

Does dolor really matter ?
-
Yes! Especially for children! It's very important that young children see themselves reflected in the world around them.
-
That's interesting point of view. I agree

Not only do books have to feature more characters of color -African Americans, Asians, Native Americans & so on; But they also have to be written by ppl of color. We have been screaming for diverse books, however, most of them on the shelves have not been written by ppl of color.
-
You can’t force white people to force minority’s to write books tf? If they don’t want to write books they’re not
-
It is not about forcing people of color to write books, it is about giving people of color that currently write books the opportunity to be represented in the same traditional publishing arena as their Caucasian counterparts.

Idk. Why don’t you put your $ into this project n publish hundreds of Latino,Black and Asian books? Actually do something instead of being so one sided all the time.
-
Why doesn’t the news organization become a children’s book publisher? Is that the question?
-
Yes. Why not? They’re in the entertainment business. Wouldn’t be much of a stretch to put out children’s books

-
That’s not really how this works

Are African-Americans writing children’s books & they aren’t getting published?
-
Yes Absolutely! It’s very difficult to any other than small independent publishers to even look at our books. Most of us Self-pub and sell our own books. Of course, those sells aren’t tracked.

I mean....I didn’t see a white person in a book until I was 11 until I started a mixed school. Most of the folks I know can say it was only Black books in their home, so the 9% been working HARD.
-
And honestly, if we only make up 13% of the population, 9% not bad
#ToMe. -
Man, thank you so much for being logical and not looking at every unintentional thing as racism. I applaud you miss.
-
Now be clear, still doesn't mean that racism doesn't exist in the publishing world. It's alive and well.
-
But I do want to acknowledge that there are THOUSANDS of Black books floating around...and real ones know that a large chunk of our canon is self-published. How do we know if anyone of those were counted in the study bc many are often sold in Black owned bookstores or festivals?
-
And like....has any Black parent in the world ever bought all 9% and was like, "DAMN, IT AINT ENOUGH BLACK BOOKS FOR OUR KIDS?" No...so....why is this even a conversation??
