We did this in school, and while I can see how it is a misleading exercise, it was a strategy to get the class into the mindset of the south and try to understand their motives entering the Civil War.

I've heard it defended as that. My question is "why do we need to understand someone's motive for owning a slave?" I don't want to understand Dahmer's motives either.
-
It's in no way moral, but how can you just disregard someone's entire stance because you don't agree with it?
-
because owning other humans is a trash stance?
-
So because it's a trash stance from your perspective then it must be disregarded because it doesn't fall in your beliefs. I think what this intelligent man is trying to say, in order to fully understand why slavery was bad we must always understand both sides of the argument.
-
I think we can all agree that owning a slave is a bad thing. I domt think anyone is arguing against that. But it's also wrong and ignorant to disregard other people's belief because you think yours are superior.
-
When their beliefs are this bad, it is fine to feel superior. We should all be superior to the belief that people are property.

What the fuuuuuck is wrong with people down in the south
-
It’s good to learn about WHY things happen so they don’t happen again
-
We already know why it happened man
-
Better question: Why is it STILL happening in other countries to this day?
-
Slavery has been prevalent throughout human history because you can MAKE someone do something easier or cheaper than convincing them to do it on their own free will. All colours have been victims of systemic racism throughout history. The world is catching up at different rates
-
It does not cost less to forcibly “make” someone do anything rather than educating them and providing means to understand what they’re doing is bad.
-
Economies in the third world who adopt practices of the nations ahead like the US and China have a stream line effect or economic development. (Catch up) So if you institutionalize moral/economic development in those places, you create an environment that helps both sides.
