Try a small business coffee shop instead!
...but smaller coffee shops aren’t on every block AND they haven’t always been welcoming & ok w folks staying long.
That’s what makes this @Starbucks story soooo offensive. Starbucks in the past HAS been an affirming place.
They’ve messed up royally, though.pic.twitter.com/bO3Q3TFeTh
Hard situation for the cops doing their job...They get told two people were trespassing by the manager of a Starbucks. They wanted the do black men gone. They are required to do what they have to do by law. It all goes back to racist manager.
It all comes back to the manager making situation out of nothing. I’ve stayed at Starbucks for hours multiple times before.
Did you purchase something while there?
Sometimes no. While working on my Masters, I'd go to Starbucks for hours to work on research and papers. Hell, I just hung out there for 2 plus hours a week ago waiting to get new tires and an alignment next door
Good for you, but if they asked you to leave it would be well within their rights to.
...yet guess who they wouldn't ask to leave?
Paying customers
White people. As a white person who has spent hours a week at Starbucks using their wifi I can comfortably say the answer is: white people
Loitering maybe, but trespassing? No wonder there is so much racial tension in this country.
Once you are asked to leave and don’t you are then trespassing on private property
"An employee called the police for help to get the men out of the store but later regretted that it escalated into an arrest, said a company official familiar with the incident" Looks like the employee thought they were just loitering but instead they were taken out in handcuffs
I suspect that employee is just trying to save their own butt at this point. Said employee could have stepped in at any time to say it was OK for the men to stay.
No he couldn’t once the cops get their they have to resolve the situation.
Resolving the situation would have been the @Starbucks employee/manager telling the police officers that there was no problem and that the men could stay.
Resolving the situation would have been the two men buying a muffin and becoming paying customers.
They were waiting for their friend, who did in fact arrive & confirmed that he had invited them with the intent of buying them the coffee/food. @Starbucks corporate model is specifically geared to being "the third place" and that does NOT include a time limit to order coffee.
