As a gun owner and a 2A supporter, the guy screwed up big time, if the facts are as stated. To clarify for the layman, a 200 yard shot with a pistol is a ridiculous shot, even if it’s a high powered one w/ optics. Something doesn’t sound right.

The article also says it was a single-shot pistol. So either someone screwed up the details here or there’s something very strange about this story.
-
All normal pistols are semi-auto (single shot per trigger pull) I don’t see why they had to mention that. At 200 yards, anything short of a full blown military machine gun such as the M240 and M249, would be inaccurate due to the recoil spread.

There are Thompson Contenders chambered in 308, single shot break down pistols.

Those aren’t “normal” pistols now are they?

This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard today...never seen someone hunt deer with a pistol.
-
Me either. Something off here.
-
It was a contender pistol. It shoots a rifle round from a large handgun with a scope. It doesn't make it better. It is still incredibly irresponsible to shoot from that far in that low light.
-
Well leave it to
@cnnbrk to explain it as simply a pistol. -
Yeah people hear pistol and forget that there are plenty of pistols that shoot rifle and shotgun rounds.
-
Yeah there are but they are ridiculously stupid. The barrel length (or lack there of) and lack of a stock make it an unbelievably dumb choice for hunting. Actually it’s a stupid design all around.
-
Great for gangbanging
-
Well I pity the asshole that tries to hold one sideways.

If you’re so far from a target (or it’s so dark) that you can’t tell the difference between a deer and a woman walking her dog and you still shoot at it, you deserve to be charged with negligent homicide. Lock him up.
