Australia's Catholic Church says it will accept 98% of recommendations made by a high-level commission into child sexual abuse, but that it would maintain the sanctity of confession https://cnn.it/2PSY37J pic.twitter.com/ga3ZzudaYJ

Part of forgiveness is making restitution and the first step of restitution is confessing- not just to God but to those you have wronged. So this whole premise of "sanctity of confession.keeping" is really just a shitty way to protect the church, and NOT ITS KIDS! #disgraceful

The “sanctity of confesions” is an entrenched Catholic principle”.Even courts of law have principles about admissible and inadmissible evidence. If confessions can be used as evidence, people will NOT confess period.

I understand that. However, if the catholic priests were seeking TRUE absolution of their sins, restitution and confession to the ones you've sinned against is part of that. The church should insist on that as part of their penance. But they dont. Hence the bs.

That is the dilemma. Criminals ,who may include priests, (paedophile priests ARE criminals) may confess . Is the one receiving the confession supposed to break the rules and report the confessors to the authorities? We may as well abolish confessions inthe Catholic church .

At a minimum, they can make their penance be confession to the law as well as psych care and suspension of priesthood until all those conditions are met.

What’s the point of keeping the sanctity if confession if someone confessed that a priest touched them inappropriately. God damn the Catholic Church

There is no sanctity of confession. If a crime has been committed, the priests or powers that be should be reporting it instead of protecting their own reputation.

It’s not how it works. I think - technically - you’re not actually forgiven unless you turn yourself in...so there should be room to maneuver

I’m just saying, technically speaking when you go to confession, the priest says you gotta do something for the forgiveness part, when it’s big, they tell you to turn yourself in...now if you don’t, then all bets should be off

I understand what you are saying but it appears they were and always have been protecting each other. It's still a sin. You must strive to be a better person the next day than you were the previous even if you're atheist otherwise you learn nothing and are an empty vessel

😡Make sure abusers are protected, no matter what, right?! How does that safeguard children?! It doesn’t. It tells abusers: “It’s OK to abuse, as long as u confess; it won’t go any further.” The Catholic Church continues to infuriate me - says this former Catholic school girl.🤨
