I have the same experience with twitter on iPhone, it won't ever open ('twitter is taking too long to load') in the embedded browser (the one you get when you click a link inside another app), you have to explicitly redirect it to Safari browser. Quality software

IMO the assertion that experience is getting worse is plain wrong. I had a Pentium III with 128mb of RAM as my first PC, and it was horrible, everything was slow and clunky and took forever to happen. These days I can alt-tab seamlessly between a game and browser with 100 tabs.

What I think has changed: it's no longer the era of the lone "hero" coder. It's now the "stand on giants shoulders" era. That makes some people uncomfortable. I still have (and sometimes use, for fun) my machines from the 80s and 90s. Today's software is truly leagues better.

Have you looked at Unikernels / http://mirage.io ? Build a compile-time specialized kernel into your app as a library, run in ring0 (either virtual or physical). Huge efficiency gains. Also worth looking at the original Exokernel work.

Also http://osv.io if you're not an ocaml person...

It seems like you're making two arguments here. 1. Hardware should expose a documented/standardized ISA. 2. Hardware should be simpler and more like SoCs. Number 1 would be wonderful but seems hard to get to. Number 2 seems like the direction things are moving anyway though.

I got really excited listening to this. I can't even begin to imagine how awesome it would be to live in a world like you've described.
