It's kind of absurd how bad modern "official" dietary advice is. Whenever I read retrospective analyses of medical board recommendations I'm astonished at how amateur their "science" was (see, for example, this analysis: http://www.nutritionjrnl.com/article/S0899-9007(11)00314-5/fulltext#sec3 …) )
Just because something is difficult doesn't mean you can't tell when you haven't scientifically determined something. They have always had more than enough data to know that they didn't know anything and shouldn't be making recommendations.

Saying you know nothing is a very scientific thing to do, but not appreciated by the public. :) Look at how many people give nutrition advice as if they knew what they are doing.
