Read Tiger Tiger! (Also known as The Stars My Destination) by Alfred Bester. Not social media, everyone learns how to teleport and it shatters social discourse (people turn their houses into mazes to prevent theft and rape, etc). Unappreciated masterpiece.

Also almost any sci fi about mind reading goes down that path as well, telepathy always rendered as curse not blessing - no one wants to know what others REALLY think

Not really, it was a concerted effort with his sister and the end result of that effort was generalized influence. His steps into becoming Hegemon are more detailed in the Shadow Saga (those books follow Bean, who is a super genius himself). Great fun, those books.

Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep" has the Net of a Million Lies. It's more like Usenet, but it's very much used to horrible ends and not to be trusted.

Clearly I need to find and read this part :)

Locke and Demosthenes; though, iirc the sister played Demosthenes. I’d argue The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy predicted the internet of things (and associated bullshit) too, if that’s remotely interesting
