I recommend i3 if you're willing to try a tiling wm.

I use straight up Gnome3.simple but effective. (Use the alternative alt-tab switcher though)

I switched to Gnome 3. The tweak tool and extension mechanism allow for a lot of customization *and* the defaults are better.

Not sure about the specific complaint with monitors though. I don't expect good behavior out of any Linux WM in that situation.

@cmuratori, press Alt+Spacebar with said window on focus to 'retrieve' them. A context menu will appear, select 'move' and pull it back. -
