Well, if your using Ubuntu as the distribution, actually, YES, you do need a Linux version :( If you're Arch et al, you're fine :)

is this still true for ubuntu? i thought the only non-gnu "feature" was the amazon shopping lens which got removed in latest LTS etc.

Last time I tried it (a few months ago?) it still had all sorts of ridiculousness, like needing a Ubuntu account to use various parts of it.

Yeah, Mint is not "Ubuntu based" - they are _both_ Debian-based. Actual Ubuntu requires Ubuntu accounts for their default package GUI, etc.

Mint does not require these things. Unfortunately, Mint also isn't as reliable an install as Ubuntu, and often fails on Optimus installs :(

So although I guess there are probably some things Mint pulls from Ubuntu, it avoids the bad (accounts, etc.) _and_ the good (Optimus, etc.)

Although to be honest I've never really looked at specifically what packages Mint gets from where, so who knows.
