I mean, for example, the tactic that publicly telling people off for expressing certain views is effective at reducing those views.

Well, first off, how are we measuring that assertion? And second, it also has lots of other real, negative effects.

Sure, political tactics can have disastrous, unintentional side effects. As for measuring it, look at language policing for offensive terms.

And I mean look at cases where language policing has been effective at changing what's socially acceptable ways to describe minorities.

But is that the actual goal? Eg., if there was backlash from that which resulted in worse situations, that would be a net negative right?

So I think you have to be very careful how you access the success of something. You have to look at very long timespans.

I'm not a fan of long-term slippery slope arguments. :)

At the point when it comes apparent (and different people will disagree about the threshold), you can take countermeasures.

Anyway, a lot of these issues are being sorted out internally on the left, so I wouldn't assume this current situation is permanent.

It would be cool if they did. There's not a lot of room for me on the right, so, I'd like to have something at least partially palatable.

We'll see how long it takes. And it's important to keep in mind not just the reaction but what they're reacting to. At least to me it is.

The rise of far right populist movements in the West is seriously concerning, infinitely more to me than public language policing.
