So, although I probably can't offer much help, I would just say make sure you do premul in linear space not sRGB...

I found that every version of Photoshop in the past 10+ years has the same blending bug as me which is enlightening+infuriating

I did previously run into the premultiply-in-linear and addressed it in the way you mention.
