Is there a good reference somewhere that discusses why digital camera sensors need ISO settings at all (instead of just being, say, 24-bit)?
Well shutter speed is what correlates to how long you collect light... so you're already setting that value.

ISO on cameras just basically sets the range of numbers you record, if you will. It's something you never _actually_ want to set.

Stated alternately, shutter speed and F-stop are the two values that actually affect the image...
