Is there a good reference somewhere that discusses why digital camera sensors need ISO settings at all (instead of just being, say, 24-bit)?
I'm assuming that this is a hardware limitation and not just people being stupid (because boy that would be reeeeeeallly stupid :)

ISO settings are used for jpeg output (8 bit), RAW is linear (usually 12 or 14 bits)
