Well, it's a symbol prefixed with __, so it's reserved for the implementation. There's a bunch of similar hook symbols for C++.

It is not reserved in that sense - it _must_ be defined by an include file. It is not intrinsically defined by thge compiler.

So you _have_ to define it, but you can't accidentally define it without declspecs or it crashes.
