So you _have_ to define it, but you can't accidentally define it without declspecs or it crashes.

Obviously the appropriate response here is for the compiler to issue a "missing declspec" warning or something.

Well, it is: because it has __ you're not allowed to define it, only the implementation (aka the compiler header).

And it being defined like that has many advantages (chiefly not needing to special case Intellisense, etc.)
