Regarding how not to take up any space with the build output, why not just added a red text line underneath the jump line?

It could persist until you edit the line and then it would collapse away.

Jump to the next error, and that red line goes away and the new error inserts itself as a new red text line.

I'd like to have some sort of 'virtual text' system but it seems premature to add that. I could just write the error into...

the buffer for now, and then try to delete it out when appropriate. But that seems error prone right now for a lot of reasons.

But something like this is definitely the ultimate plan, there's just no great feature to do it with yet.

Well I think this just naturally works with line wrapping, doesn't it? You have to clean that up anyway?

It's just some point in the line that's like, "it's uneditable from here".

In general though, yeah, it's kind of a larger problem - like right now there's no highlighting either, really.

I'd like to be able to highlight all the matches in a search, etc., and that's sort of the same kind of thing.
