_Because_ I think Unity sucks, I am interested in encouraging people to try to develop new things.

It's just about trying to get enough people interested in making good engine things.

And the other important part is understanding what goes on in the engine - not necessarily making it.

So I would argue that someone using Unity can still be proactive is knowing what's happening...
